Ahhhh, Venice - the City of Love.

NOT! I hate this place. It is filthy. It looks as though the patrons dump gallons of trash into the water on an hourly basis. I exaggerate - I didn't hate it per say; it just wasn't what I thought it was going to be. There are beautiful parts of the city. It is old, and the history is fascinating. The buildings have so much character. There was one point when Joel and I were resting and I saw a staircase going down into the water, and I wondered - where did this city all start? I could see at least 6-7 stairs below the surface of the water. I wish that I could scuba dive through Venice. Now that would be amazing.

Things we learned:

1. Venice is not as cool as everyone says it is.

2. Shop around for a Venetian mask. At one shop it is 80 euro and the next 30. Cheapskates...

I want this one when I'm rich and famous.

3. I lied about the pizza in a foreign country - Italian pizza is AWESOME! Maybe it's just the French that suck.

4. The girl who was taking a picture of the foaming-at-the-mouth stray cat is retarded. Who gets that close for a picture of a stray?

5. We miss American food. Who would have thought I would beg for a taco time?

6. San marco is pretty sweet.

7. I could never live in Venice! It takes twice as long to get anywhere because the boats are SO much slower than driving.

Joel and I stumbled upon this musical museum that had some instruments played by famous Italians. There was one as old as 700 AD!

Cruise - Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik was easily the most gorgeous place that we visited on our trip. They have had a revolution in the past 50 years, and all of the buildings that were damaged or destroyed now have orange roofs (which is the country color). It's pretty amazing to look over the top of the city and see that 90% of it has an orange roof. Breathtaking. Joel and I got into the little city first thing in the morning before all the shops were open, and it was so gorgeous and peaceful. There is a fort on the coast that has an entire city within its walls. We walked the circumference of the city as the sun was rising. I think that walk will be forever engrained in my memory. It was perfect.

Things we learned:

1. Dubrovnik has the best slushies in the ENTIRE UNIVERSE!

2. Apparently, the man at the shop on the wall thinks it is Christmas all year round.

3. Get to the old city first thing in the morning to walk the wall. It was amazing.

4. Croatia is the most beautiful city we have been to yet.

5. You know those pictures where the ocean seems too blue and too clear to be real? Yeah. It's real in Dubrovnik.

Cruise - Naples

Still relatively tired from Rome, we didn't do anything TOO exciting in Naples. Naples was one of Joel's favorite places. It was very much like NYC - Busy City. This is one of the fashion districts of the world. I wish that I would have taken pictures of the alley ways with HUNDREDS of illegal vendors. Needless to say, we did most of our shopping here. Naples was nice. I liked it okay - it was a little too dirty for me, but there you go.

Things we learned:

1. America may be obese, but Italy SMELLS!

2. Downside of men in Italy wearing tight pants = everyone has a crack

3. If you see a Nazi symbol painted on a nearby wall, that may be a sign that you've gone too far into the city...(I wish I took a picture of it, but I got a little frightened and bolted..)

4. The young women here are gorgeous, but then they all have to put a cigarette in their mouths. No wonder people from foreign countries don't smile in pictures - they've all smoked since they were teens!

5. If they want 50 Euro for the fake Prada bag, just walk away. The guy two stalls down is selling it for 15.

6. Never watch the "family friendly" magic show on the boat. I have never seen so many thongs in my life. These people who established the show as "family friendly" must not have families.

7. Never order any beverages to be sent to your room on a Carnival cruise. Even though you have a beverage package, they still charge you 4 dollars to have it sent to your room.

8. Siesta still exists in parts of the world.

9. We never knew that formal night also meant naked night.

10. People in Italy are somewhat smart people - they actually wear helmets. I actually think that they are a fashion statement here.

So, funny story to go with this pharmacy. I saw these kind of pharmacies ALL OVER THE PLACE. I was looking at these pictures last night and I said that second word out loud - omeopatia..."Joel, that kind of sounds like homeopathic..." Joel: "it is. I just didn't want to tell you then because I didn't want you upset on the trip" BAHAHAHA! He is so cute. He knows me so well... :)

Cruise - Livorno/Pisa

Been so absent. Been SO busy. There it is.

We got to Pisa on day 4, and we were SO exhausted and sore from running around in Rome the day before that we saw the leaning tower and went back to the boat to relax the rest of the day. I had no idea that Pisa was a college town. It was a nice place, but I don't feel too bad about just going to see the tower.

Thing we learned:

1. Leaning Tower of Piza = awesome!
Slushie bought at a near by restaurant in 90 degree weather = priceless

2. Never plan to spend an entire port day out and about then the day before you killed yourself in Rome and you are more sore than you have recollection of being in your entire existence.

3. Piza is a college town. No high end cars, and WAY more bicycles than scooters.

4. Plan on spending half of your money on transportation.

5. I will never be more grateful for Walmart than I am right now. How do these people survive without grocery stores?!?

6. Don't worry if you get lost - you look like a tourist and the locals will direct you to the nearest monument.

7. When the guy at the train station tells you that it is a 20 minute walk to the tower, make sure you take the bus because it is a 40 minute walk.

Cruise to the Mediterranean - ROME

Port #2 was Rome. It was amazing. I think this was my favorite place! You can see a million pictures of the Colosseum and never know what it's truly like...there is this overwhelming feeling when you see it and walk in. The Sistine Chapel was another highlight. No words describe how beautiful and intricate it is - breathtaking. I wish we could have spent 2 port days here. We didn't get to see everything we wanted to, but I definately would LOVE to go back there some day.

Things we learned:

1. Never ask the guys dressed as centurions in front of the Colosseum if you can have a picture with them! They may charge you 20 euro to have a picture taken with YOUR OWN CAMERA.

2. While traveling in Europe, one must consider wearing a filtered mask as you may suffer serious second hand smoke.

3. When going on a cruise that ports in Rome, make sure to walk stairs for at least a month to get used to going up all of the stairs in the city.

4. If you are traveling to Rome, you must NEVER try to fit in every historical minument in one day. You will find that you cannot and you are so exhausted you think you can't make it to the only express train back to the port.

5. Drivers in Europe are very dangerous. If they look like they aren't going to stop, get out of the way because they won't.

6. Humidity stinks. Literally, The filtered mask may also help in this area because all of the people (both ugly and beautiful - skinny and large) smell seriously spicy.

7. Make sure to put sunscreen of your feet or you may find that you end up with an interesting sunburn.

8. When bartering for a price, say ten lower than their lowerst price. In the end, they will say 5 more than what you said, and you've got a deal.

9. Never plan the Sistine Chapel for last. It takes MILES to actually get to the chapel once you are in the Museum of the Vatican, PLUS it is 15 Euro per person to get into the museum.

10. Nothing is cheap in Europe. Nothing.

Joel and I happened upon this GORGEOUS graveyard on the south end of Rome. There were people there from the 1300s. There's one there that definately looks Roman, but we couldn't read the date (see below). We even saw some US Confederate Vets burried there (see below). It was Beautiful.

Cruise to the Mediterranean - Monte Carlo

Joel and I both graduate this year, so we decided that we would take a big trip to celebrate! We took a 12-day cruise to the Mediterranean. I will do 1 post per place we went to so as to not OVERLOAD a post. Not that it is a surprise, but I took SO MANY PICTURES! I will try to limit the number I post...NOT. We all know how that would be - I would say I limited it and you would see 30 photos...but what you don't know is that I narrowed the # from 400 to 30. That's pretty awesome, I think. Well, the first port we went to was Monte Carlo, Monaco, France. GORGEOUS! We were particularly enthralled with this place because it was the first port. But, it is beautiful regardless. Here are some things that we experienced in Monaco.

1. Never order pizza in a foreign country. You may or may not get cheese on it that tastes like vomit.

2. Everyone smokes. This is why they have a defibrillator every mile or so.

3. Go to the be bathroom before leaving the boat. You may get diarrhea and have to pay a Euro to use their bathroom.

4. Never order water to drink. They will charge you 3,50 Euro for a bottle of water.

5. One of the best things about not drinking is that you get to watch the 40-50 (sometimes 80) year old women trying to dance like hoochies at 1 am.

6. Don't ask the guard at the palace to take a picture of him. Just do it when he isn't looking.

This is the little birthday girl. It was Adelyn's 1st birthday this summer. This gorgeous girl is the daughter of mi prima, Alicia. For her special day, they rented out an outdoor pool for a while and (I'm retarded and thought Rich made burgers...boo.) It was STEVEN who made the burgers... Anyway, it was SO much fun. Guelito - The Final Goodbye Vol. 3

This will be the last of the posts about Guelito for a while. This is the first time for Joel to see the pictures as well...and he gets really sad. He LOVES talking about Guelito and all of the wonderful things about him. He even loves looking at the pictures, it just makes him sad. I think 3 posts is all he can take for now. I'm sure that in the future we will have several posts about Guelito and his amazing journey here on this earth. Towards the end of the funeral service it began to rain. Everyone kept saying that it was because Guelito loved the rain. I'm sure that God was delighted to give his good and faithful servant a little rain to honor his life. For now, goodbye, Guelito.

Amidst all of the tears and whispered goodbyes, there was so much life and happiness. My little nephew was just born recently, Guielito's grandchildren smiling and laughing with each other, little Olivia loving life - so many instances of happiness, joy, and love. I think this how Guelito remembers the event. Happiness. Love. Live and in Living Color. Although, I do suspect that every moment was spent next to the love of his life.

Samuel Cruz Alba - Guelito Vol.1

Samuel Cruz Alba is Joel's grandfather on his dad's side of the family. He is one of the sweetest men that I have ever known. I know that I only knew him for 5 short years, but I feel like I have known him for a lifetime. Earlier this year, Guelito passed on from this life to the next. I have been postpoing writing about this due to the fact that Joel has taken his passing very hard. I didn't want to remind him of how sad he was when he passed. It has been almost 6 months, and I feel the time is right to write about this amazing man. I wanted to show his viewing in black and white to focus on the passing of our dear Guelito.

From the moment I met him, he made me feel like I was a part of the family - like he loved me. Both he and Guelita have been so good to me. They have always made me feel a welcome addition to la familia. That's how he lived his life. All of the good qualities that a person should have in life, he had. Goodness, that is, in essence, what he was. He was such a strong man, and gave love and hope to everyone he met. I don't have enough good things to say about him. Most importantly, he loved my husband dearly. They had the sweetest relationship. He provided Joel with an example of how to live and love life. Joel used to love joking around with him. Even in his last days, he was always good for a laugh. This world has lost an amazing man. He has been greatly missed and we anxiously await the day when we can see him again.

Graduation - The Big Day

This was one of the best days of my life. I never have to attend school agian!! Not one more exam, no more 15 hour study days, no more busy work. It's an incredible feeling. However, the time of that exhilerating feeling has come and gone...and I kinda miss school. I must be a glutton for punishment. You know of the movie You've Got Mail where Tom Hanks writes her an email talking about the fall and wanting to buy her a boquet of freshly sharpened pencils? I seriously LOVE the fall and the back to school time. I miss it. I can't believe I won't get that anxiety of the "first day of school" again. Strange. Life must move on. I guess I will have the feelings again when I have kids that are attending school. For now, I love my "big girl" job and happily await the day when fall becomes the fall that I once loved. I figured that since I've been posting about my pharmacy school friends, there is one more of these people that I know I just couldn't have done without. Becky. She is one of the sweetest people that I know! She is one of those people that goes out of their way to make people feel good. Becky is always good for a laugh, as well. Even when she is having extreme emotions and anxiety, she is always up for a good joke. She is SO smart! An ocean of anxiety would swell up in her before an exam, and - in the end - it was all unnecessary because she aced her tests. I will never forget the trip last December with her - she came out of her shell and was SO MUCH FUN! We also share a love (other than pharmacy). Photography. We both LOVE taking pictures! However, she does have a better camera than I do, and she does take better pictures. Anyhow, I LOVE this girl!

Stacy is another one of those people that I couldn't have made it through pharmacy school without! Stacy reminds us all to have fun, even when we are studying every night until 10 or past. She also reminded us that we needed to eat! Sometimes hours and hours would go by and Stacy would remind us that it was definately time to recharge with some food. Stacy is also a very talented artist! She says I don't know because I haven't seen very much of her work, but I am extremely impressed with the work that I've seen. Unfortunately, she is a Ute fan. Boo. I'm over it. Stacy is just one of those people that is just sunshine wherever she goes and brings out the happy things in our lives. One of the best friends I have ever had! Love you, Stacy.

Emilee and John - The Incredibles

Emilee is one of my dear friends that I met in pharmacy school. She is one of those people I mentioned in my previous post that I couldn't have done without! Anne of Green Gables calls people like her a kindred spirit - and that she is. We always have a good time when we hang with the Kuchenmeisters!

Her husband John is wonderful as well! He is a radio DJ and tons of fun. He recently has been diagnosed with cancer and had to go through a surgery which has made having children very difficult. When I heard the news, I just cried. I've hardly met people who would make better parents. On top of that, I know that she has been wanting to have children so badly. They will have a few tries with in vitro insemination; however, please keep them in your prayers. I know that adoption will be an option for them as well. Whatever their circumstances may be in the future, I know that they will be incredible parents to those children that God has meant for them to have.

On a lighter note, she wanted some grad pics and we thought we would do some couples as well. They have a beautiful family, and we love them dearly :)

I have now graduated as of June 4, 2011. For those of you who don't know, I have been going to pharmacy school for the last 3 years. I obtained a Doctor of Pharmacy. So yes, I am Dr. Jessica Alba. Sounds kinda funny, right? My dad tells people his daughter, Jessica Alba, is a doctor who sells drugs (like I haven't heard that one) haha.

I am so grateful for all of the people in my life who supported me and helped me through those incredibly ROUGH years - school friends, my parents, professors, Joel, and my Father in Heaven. I am also grateful for those people who thought I couldn't do it and wouldn't make anything of my life - sometimes they were the ones that made it easier to get through the tough times knowing that if I did I could prove them wrong. So many people have been wonderful and generous with their congratulations, especially Joel's Guelita and Tia Edna. I am so blessed to have so many incredible people in my life! Thanks for everything. Without all these people and many blessings from heaven, there is no way I could have made it through.

Picture Hiatus and an Olivia Overload!

For some strange reason, after Christmas...I didn't take pictures until EASTER! Well, it's probably because I was SO busy with my rotation at the tim - being 80 hours a week, that pictures went to a back burner. Not to mention that Joel used one of my SD cards for something and cleared it without downloading what was on it. So, Christmas Day and New Years Eve/Day of 2010 are deleted into the abyss. It made me sick when I found out. I just cried. He didn't mean to; he was just in a hurry to get something done. Still love him to pieces though :)

Since everyone in the family is an adult (with new addition of Little Lucas) - Olivia got to find TONS of eggs all by herself! She loved it. She got a little excited and wanted to start eating the candy in them before she was done finding the eggs. My Suegros must have spent a while hiding the eggs. I couldn't believe how many of them there were. But, they love their Oli. I may be a little biased, but she is seriously one of the cutest little girls in the WHOLE WORLD! I love this girl so much :)

Joel Raymundo Alba - 26 Years of Life

This man is the Love of My Life. I can't believe he is 26 years old today. In honor of his 26th birthday, I have come up with 26 things that I LOVE about my sweetheart. There are a million things I could list...I just love him so much, and I love that I get to keep him forever :)

1. I love Joel's sense of style. He is so indie in his shorts, hoodie, and Toms. So cute :)

2. I love how Joel loves to make people laugh. Even just a smile when he knows they’re

down.

3. I love the funny noises he makes just before falling asleep. I remember the first time I heard
them - he had no idea.

4. I love that he can watch all of the Ocean's movies sequentially more than once and not
grow tired of them.

5. I love his skills as an incredible videographer. He truly has found a profession that shows
off his talents and gifts.

6. I love his gorgeous eyes! I could stare at those milk chocolates ALL DAY!

7. I love his charisma. EVERYONE LOVES JOEL.

8. I love that I can't get a picture of Joel where he is smiling. He always has to make a funny
face. (see above and below)

9. I love the way he laughs when he is doing something mischievous.

10. I love the way he tells me I look beautiful when I look like death warmed over.

11. I love that he loves movies just as much as I do. We watch everything together.

12. I love how we hate doing anything without the other. Everything revolves being together.

13. I love that we both LOVE to play games! Gamers for life.

14. I love his nicknames for me. They are so endearing.

15. I love Joel’s amazing voice, and especially when he serenades me to sleep.

16. I love staying up until 3am playing civilization when we both have to be to work the next
morning.

17. I love that he still makes me breakfast in the morning, even when it's just toaster strudels
or toaster waffles :)

18. I love the way he is so concerned when I'm not feeling well. He totally babies me.

19. I love that he is the best snuggler in the WORLD! I fall into his arms and everything is
okay.

20. I love that he is the sweetest man alive - he does the little things in life that make our
relationship romantic.

21. I love how insightful Joel is - he blows me away with the comments he makes.

22. I love how sweet Joel is with children. He is going to be an amazing dad.

23. I love how supportive Joel is. I never could have made it through grad school without him.

24. I love that Joel makes everything in my life better.

25. I love that Joel is happy and we are immeasurably happy together.

26. I love how much Joel loves the gospel. Someone told me once that I should find a man
that loves God because if he knows how to love God, he knows how to love me. I found
that guy.

Steve Jobs - Genius Extraordinaire

February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011

As I was sitting at work yesterday, I received a phone call from my dear husband, Joel, informing me that one of the greatest minds of our time has passed on from this life. Joel and I were so saddened to hear this distressing news. After a 7 year battle with pancreatic cancer, it finally overtook his body. Pancreatic cancer has VERY small survival rate. As of 2009, the American Cancer Society stated that the 1-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is only 24%, and the overall 5-year survival is 5%. Steve bested the odds with 7.

For those of you who don't know his name, I'm sure you know of his legacy. He has touched the lives of millions of individuals and families with his genius. He is best known as the founder of Apple Inc. He was also the co-founder of Pixar. With Pixar alone, he brought to our homes Toy Story; A Bug's Life; Toy Story 2; Monsters, Inc.; Finding Nemo; The Incredibles; Cars; Ratatouille, WALL-E; Up; Toy Story 3; and Cars 2. So much joy was and is still brought into millions of lives because of this man. Films that shaped our generation.

He is also the man that brought you, most famously, the iPod, iPhone, and iPad - among many others. These instruments have revolutionized the world. Everyone has been affected by this man's imagination. Every corner of the entertainment industry has benefited from his inventions - music is readily accessible at the click of a button or touch of a screen, films are created and viewed, games played, pictures taken and edited, and phone calls and video chats made to loved ones. Think of how many thousands of people have had their dreams fulfilled because of the opportunities provided by this man.

These are some of the things that have been said of him since his passing:

He was an inspiration to so many of us - making us feel as though our simple actions can better the world. These are his words from a graduation commencement soon after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer:

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life...Don't let the noise of others opinions drown out your inner-voice. And, most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become."

So, let us live our dreams as he did. Life's too short to not love what we do and those around us. Steve lived his dreams in his short 56 years while battling a pain crippling cancer and a liver transplant. If Jobs can do it, so can I. He is the embodiment of the words, "Be the change you want to see in the world".

I said to Joel last night, "Is it lame that I feel so sad about his passing? I didn't even know him." Joel confidently responded, "Yes you did. We all did. He put his heart and soul into his inventions." I think he is right. We all knew him because we know his products. His spirit will live on through all of us and through his inspired inventions. Steve Jobs provided us with a better world, and has left his mark with all of us - it happens to look like this:

Last of the Cali trip from December. The pictures of the bird below require explanation...this bird came straight from the fiery pit below. If people got too close, he seriously would freak out. He even did the "crane" stance prepared to attack somone who was 10 feet away trying to take a picture with it. (see below) Anyway, this was one of the best trips ever. Love you, girls!

Huntington Beach was FAB! Don't be mad, but this is the first set of Huntington beach pics...I couldn't choose! I took over 500 pics at the beach so 32 isn't so bad right?? This post has 16 and the next will have 16. It was so gorgeous! We had Hula Pie at Duke's and spent a few hours on the pier waiting for the sun to set. I had never seen surfers before, and you can tell by the pictures that I was COMPLETELY fascinated with them! They were so incredible. Surfing is definately on the bucket list. Enjoy!

Part 2. How could I forget the Magic Castle?! This was definately one of the highlights of the trip. There is a reason there is only 1 picture from this event...they don't allow cameras! It is so secretive that we had to get an invite from a magician that is a part of their society. One of our professors happened to be one of these such magicians. It was amazing! We saw incredible magic, paid for over-priced food, and listened to Irma play the piano forever! They have a player piano that you tell it to play ANY song and she does it. Amazing.

Next up, Disneyland. Need I say more?

Six Flags.

Okay. This last December, some of my best friends in the world (aka: pharmacy school friends) and I went to APhA Midyear conference. APhA = American Pharmacist Association. Emilee, Stacy, and I submitted a poster presentation on Herbals/Dietary Supplements we had researched, and it got accepted to present at the conference. This last conference was held in Anaheim, CA...and we all know that this is my FAVORITE place in the WHOLE WORLD! So, on we went to CA. It was one of the funnest trips I've ever had. I love my pharmacy school friends. They really are some of the best friends I've ever had!

My younger brother, Spencer, was in Bingham High School's musical this last year - Brigadoon. He even had a minor role with some singing parts! He is so awesome! I LOVE this kid. He is one of the sweetest kids I know. He's going to do great things in this world. Next year, BHS is going to do Beauty and the Beast, which is great because there are so many male parts. He really wants to do it again, so I hope it works out :) He was amazing. Went and saw it EVERY night.

I can't believe it has almost been a year since this point in our lives! Oh how the times flies. I decided to throw a surprise birthday party for Joel for his 25th birthday. It turned out to be so fun! His 2 best friends were there, and Joel could have just had them and been happy. But, there were so many more people that came than I expected. My sister, Nicolle, made an incredible decision this last year. She decided that she wants to be a nurse medic for the United States Army. I asked her why she wanted to join the Army, and she told me that she wants to "help heal wounded soldiers". These are some pictures from the airport before she left for basic training. I'm so proud of her for making such a tough decision - even though it wasn't tough for her. I have such incredible respect for her. She is doing something that I know I couldn't do. I actually didn't think the Army life would suit her, but it is a perfect fit. I am very proud to call her my sister and Best Friend.

So, my mother is the stake primary president and she wanted to make a video and slideshow if the kids for a primary fireside she does yearly. Joel did the video, and I took pictures. Here are some of my favorites - even though all of the primary kids are SO adorable! The fireside was amazing, as per her usual and the kids loved seeing their faces and hearing one another's testimonies.

This last year Joel and I decided to buy poles and get fishing licenses. It is so great to go out where there is no cell phone service and no one around. It is sooo relaxing. So nice to be completely alone with my hubby while doing something he loves. We didn't catch any fish, but it really is one of my favorite things to do with Joel. Definately going to go more this summer :)

This was last summer when my Suegro was called to the Stake Presidency, and we were there to spend the day with them. SO relaxing :) The amazing backyard. My suegro is so talented! So happy. It's been a while since all of these events happened, but the stories are still worth telling. John, my brother in law, won an award this last year for being an amazing teacher. He teaches spanish as well as coaches SEVERAL sports at Hillcrest High School. For his recognition, along with other teachers, they were presented at an RSL game. This was the first RSL game that Joel and I had been to, and we weren't disappointed! I'm going to be honest...soccer on television is boring at its best (excluding the world cup). It's a slow paced game with almost no scoring. Woo. Tosh.0 said it best "...played by a bunch of 5'6'' fairies lightly jogging for three hours - or however long your game is. Buy a scoreboard". However, I was pleasantly suprised how much I enjoyed the RSL game. It is definately a sport that needs to be watched in person. Well here it is, and late congrats John!

Okay. So, recently I finished reading the Hunger Games Trilogy. I was so excited about it that Joel and I decided to make a cast list for the movie coming out next year. I know that Finnick isn't in the first book, but Joel and I both thought he was great! If you haven't read this series, I would STRONGLY recommend them. They are so fantastic. And, unlike Twilight, I actually love the ending of the series. Tell us what you think :)
